The Carmi-White County Girls Basketball team welcomed in a former NEC foe in the Olney Lady Tigers to McDougal-Evers Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs entered Tuesday’s game already short-handed, with senior Ashlyn Rager continuing to work to get back from a broken bone in her foot. However they would be down one more starter against the Lady Tigers as junior Caroline Simmons was at home battling the stomach flu. Nevertheless Eric Dixon’s squad battled from the opening tip until the final buzzer, but it just wasn’t enough against a talented Olney team.
Neither offense could really get going in the first quarter. Carmi did their best to work the ball inside to Torrie Rider, who had the height advantage for most of the night. The Lady Dogs were able to find seams in the Olney man-to-man defense, leading to buckets from close range. Both teams traded punches throughout the 2nd quarter, but Olney would head into the locker room with a 23-19 lead.
After the break, fatigue started to settle in for the Lady Bulldogs. Olney continued with their full court pressure, leading to CWC turnovers and easy buckets at the other end. The flood gates opened as Olney began the 3rd quarter on a 16-2 run to grow their lead to 39-21, and the Lady Tigers never looked back. Olney would end up outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 24-7 in the 2nd half, to prevail with a 47-26 win.
Carmi shot 11/35 (31%) from the field on the night, which included 0/11 from 3-point range.
Torrie Rider led CWC in scoring with 18 points.
Addi Elliott was the only other Lady Bulldog to score, she added in 8 points.
The Lady Dogs fall to 8-4 on the year, they will travel to Murray, Kentucky this Saturday to Calloway County High School to face off against Middleton (TN).
