The Carmi Rotary Club had a very relaxing meeting on Thursday, as Rotarian Patty Mills led the group in a session of Tai Chi. Patty is an instructor in this ancient Chinese art, and is also currently a student with a group in Evansville.
She explained that Tai Shi is basically slow-motion movements that work to focus your energy and provide you with noncompetitive, self-paced gentle physical exercise.
She demonstrated several Tai Chi forms to the Rotarians who did their best to follow along. Among the moves she explained, where the “bow and arrow” and the “cat”. She stated that in some moves, the participant is holding a ball of energy between their hands, and as they move, they focus on increasing that energy. Patty told the club that when a person practices this martial art for just 20 minutes per day, they can see and feel positive changes.
Rotary President Patrick Haskell, who was involved with Tai Chi many years ago, stepped in to lead the club through a nine-step warm up that was very simple but very relaxing. He told the club that when he started, he thought it was a very mild-mannered art form, until he found out that most of the moves revolved around fighting forms.
In club business, everything is moving forward with the Spring Trivia contest. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 12th at the American Legion in Carmi. As in year’s past, there will be four rounds of ten questions each. Theoretically, the questions get harder as the night goes on, and the points awarded for each correct answer also increases. Questions will be asked from such diverse topics as: History, the Bible, language, food, pop culture, sports, and many others. There will be food and drinks on hand for players and spectators. The cost per four-person team is only forty dollars, and there will be cash prizes awarded to the top three teams.
The first question will be asked at six pm, and the night should wrap up around eight.
Dale Peters won the day’s 50/50 drawing, but was not able to claim the day’s cash prize. Cindy Conley was named the day’s phantom.
The Carmi Rotary club meets every Thursday at noon at the First United Methodist Church on Main Street in Carmi. Anyone wishing to learn more about this civic organization is welcome to attend a meeting or speak with any Carmi Rotarian.
