A traffic crash on I-64 in Wayne County, Tuesday, sent one individual to the hospital, and a couple of Illinois State Police troopers scrambling to avoid being struck.
Two District 19 Police Troopers were assisting, Peggy S. Vaught, 67, of Fairfield, and a passenger, Wilbur C. Vaught, 71, of Fairfield with changing a tire on a Mercury Mountaineer, on the westbound shoulder of I-64, just west of mile post 101, when Shi Jinglin, 41, of Flushing, New York, lost control of his Mitsubishi Box Truck, on the ice-covered pavement and struck the Mercury Mountaineer. The Box Truck overturned onto the grassy shoulder of I-64. Both ISP Troopers, as well as, Peggy Vaught were outside of the Mercury Mountaineer at the time of the crash and were forced to run away from the interstate and down an embankment to avoid being struck.
Neither of the District 19 Troopers, nor Wilbur Vaught, were injured. Peggy Vaught was injured as a result of the crash and was transported by ambulance to Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Jinglin was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
ISP District 19 was assisted by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Wayne City Fire Department, Wayne City Ambulance Service, Rick’s Towing of Grayville and Rick’s Towing of Fairfield. The crash is being investigated by an ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer.
