Coach Trey Mason updated the Carmi Kiwanis club Thursday on the Carmi-White County boys and girls golf teams’ 2019 seasons.
Both golf teams are looking good this school year, and Coach Mason spent time discussing each player and his or her special place on the team. First, the girls team has 6 players and has started the year with a 3-6 record. The team roster includes Senior Allie Gee, Junior Katie Dieg, Sophomores Macey Heil, Elleigh Gray, and Laci Mills, and Freshman Saylor Mason. Coach Mason encourages girls to take interest in the sport because he receives an email every week from colleges asking if he has a female golfer.
The boys golf team is strong once again this year. Last year they finished the season 4th at the state championship. So far this year they have won the Mt. Carmel, Robinson, and Olney Invites, and they have only lost one match against Eldorado. Coach Mason stated that the biggest asset of this team is that they “want to work hard”. The boys’ team is compiled of 11 golfers: Senior Alex O’Daniel; Juniors Ty Barbre, Kaden Carter, and KaCee Fulkerson; Sophomores Oakley Gee, Lane Buchanan, Jace Burzynkski, Landon Niehaus; and Freshmen Gage Atteberry, Matthew Chapman, and Zack Roark. Coach Mason jokingly suggests that the success of this golf season is due to Alex O’Daniel’s DJing skills. It has become a ritual that 3 minutes before arriving at the golf course they play Charlie Daniel’s “The Devil went Down to Georgia” before each match. Recently Ty Barbre got sick during a match and continued playing the match and scored an Eagle on the 16th hole. Mason said that this is the type of dedicated and fun group of golfers he enjoys coaching. The Bulldogs plan to be at state again this year and hope to bring home the state title. Coach Mason encourages the community to come out and watch the Bulldogs at the Carmi Country Club.
In Carmi Kiwanis Club business, Steve Winkleman won the 50/50 opportunity to draw the orange golf ball for a chance of $110. A white ball was drawn and the pot rolls over to next week. A $100 donation was presented to the One Room School house, and Club President Katelyne Wolff announced that 29 days remain until Kiwanis Corn Day. The club has corn cob hats available for sale at Dartt & Company, LLC, Town & Country Barber Shop, First Bank, First-Mid Bank, and Peoples National Bank. The cost of each hat is $20 with a chance to win $100 with each hat purchase. The meal was prepared by Yesterday’s.
