Grayville, IL— The City of Grayville at its regular meeting on September 9th, held a public hearing concerning a proposed change to their zoning ordinance to allow recreational cannabis businesses to locate in the city. With only a few spectators present for the public hearing, and no questions or comments concerning the proposal, the city in its regular session passed an ordinance imposing a Municipal Cannabis Retailer’s Occupation Tax. While the city opted to adopt the state’s maximum tax, the council agreed this can and will be reviewed should a business wish to locate in Grayville. A proposed amendment to the zoning code was presented but will not be passed until the city’s next regular meeting on September 23rd.
With other municipalities in the southern Illinois area opting out of the possibility of the recreational marijuana business, Mayor Travis Thompson said: “This is an opportunity to capitalize on some much-needed revenue should the City of Grayville be fortunate enough to land a dispensary.”
