Illinois Awards First Licenses to Sell Recreational Marijuana

Illinois has awarded its first licenses to businesses that will be allowed to sell recreational marijuana when it becomes legal in the state next year.  Regulators have announced five medical marijuana dispensaries where residents will be able to buy small amounts of pot beginning January 1st.  Three of those locations are in Chicago suburbs.  Only one in our region…The Clinic Effingham on Ford Avenue.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation says they anticipate receiving additional applications for early approval adult use licenses as municipalities adopt relevant zoning ordinances regarding the law.  Beginning in 2020, Illinois residents will be able to legally possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower and up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.  Registered patients in the medical cannabis pilot program can have more than that if it’s grown and secured in their residence under certain conditions.  A summary of adult use cannabis law in Illinois can be found on our website in this story at wrul.com.
