Stephens Charged with Aggravated Battery After His Burglary Sentence

40 year old Danny Stephens of Crossville, no stranger to White County Jail and court has seen a lot of it this year and this week.  Court records indicate Stephens pled guilty this week to a class 2 Felony charge of Burglary. Back in mid July, the White County Sheriffs Office arrested Danny Stephens on his rural Carmi residence.  At the time, several items matching what had been taken during the burglary from White County Coal the day prior as well as in June were still in Stephen’s vehicle.  After signing a search consent, deputies found glass smoking pipes with suspectd meth as well as 9 cannabis plants under a grow light.

While in court facing these charges this week, court documents appear to show White County States Attorney Denton Aud dropped all the other charges save for the one felony charge of Burglary.  The dropped charges include one count of burglary, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia, and 2 class 4 felony charges of theft.  Stephens was sentenced to serve 7 years behind bars for the crime with 2 years mandatory supervised release and he was credited with 22 days of time served.

Fast forward to Thursday night around 9:19pm.  That’s when Crossville Police were called to Elliot on a report of a street brawl.

The Officer who responded says in his report that upon his arrival, the majority of the individuals scattered to Second Street.  Several of the individuals claimed they’d been struck by Stephens, including a man paralyzed from the waist down witness say Stephens punched in the face.  No individuals, including Stephens daughter, according to the report, were willing to sign a complaint.  Stephens was arrested for aggravated battery.  Crossville Police were assisted by the White County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Police.
