White County Historical Society
White County Historical Society wants your help preserving our history in photographs. Photos taken in White County are welcome and will be used for a photo book fundraiser for the Society. We are asking for photos at least 15 years old.
You have two ways of submitting a picture. You can scan the picture and send it along with a short description (including dates and names) to a special email account which we’ve created for this project: [email protected]. If you need assistance scanning, the Society will host a series of dates at the public libraries in Carmi, Grayville, and Norris City when you can bring in the picture, and we will scan it for you while you are writing the description. Those dates are listed below, and your pictures will be returned to you that day.
Carmi Public Library— Monday July 1 11 am–2 pm
Tuesday July 2 11 am–2 pm
Friday July 5 1 pm–5 pm
Saturday July 13 4 pm–7 pm
Saturday July 20 4 pm–7 pm
Groff Memorial Library (Grayville)— Monday July 8 11 am–2 pm
Wednesday July 10 1 pm–5 pm
Friday July 12 1 pm–5 pm
Norris City Memorial Library– Monday July 15 1 pm–3 pm
Tuesday July 16 1 pm–4 pm
Friday July 19 1 pm–3 pm
Pictures are being accepted immediately and through July 21 by email as well as at the dates and locations listed above. The idea behind the project is to create another history book of White County for the future generations to have as a reference. Chapters in the book will include churches, clubs and organizations, schools, businesses, oil and coal industry, events, the fairgrounds, main street scenes, government entities, and others. While we are interested in family life, family pictures will be used in limited numbers. The Society may not use all of the pictures submitted, but we will preserve the digital copies for future projects and for research.
The Co-Chairmen of this committee, Lisa and Emily Cowling, are very ambitious in wanting to have this book available in late August to be sold at all the fall festivals as well as available for a Christmas gift for someone special who already has everything that they need! Lisa and Emily are new to the Board and presented this idea at one of their first meetings. They have researched publishers and have a source who can make this available at a reasonable cost while being flexible with the size of the book. The price and size of the book will be determined by how many photos are submitted. The success of this project depends entirely on the public response to submitting pictures. We believe that these dates and locations plus the email availability will allow everyone in White County to have access to submitting photos for this project. We are optimistic that you will not disappoint us. The Mission Statement of the Society is to preserve and promote historical interests of White County, and we believe that a photo book priced to be included in the average family budget and household is an excellent way to achieve this mission.
