Gunzel Tells Kiwanis to Put Best Foot Forward

Healy Named as Irvine Successor; Gunzel Tells Kiwanis How to Put Best Foot Forward

Don’t waste your money on the Dr. Scholl’s custom fit Kiosk findings or toxin absorbing foot pads.  Solid advice from Podiatrist Dr. Gunzel who was the featured speaker at Thursday’s Kiwanis meeting.

Some excellent information and a truly genuine and friendly bed side manner was on display and yet the biggest news to come out of the civic club get together was actually delivered before the guest speaker ever reached the podium.  Member Holly Healy’s guest, Mayor Jeff Pollard, accompanied by his wife Rickie made a low-key formal announcement that Healy had been chosen to replace Economic Development and Administrative Assistant Sandra Irvine following her retirement slated for early June.  Irvine’s retirement hasn’t yet been formally announced but comes on the heels of City Manager Mike Buckman’s retirement announcement.  Buckman will be a guest on Open Line coming up on Thursday, April 18th.  Irvine has been instrumental the mayor says in her more than 22 years serving as White County Economic Development officer and Chief Assistant to the mayor.  Healy served as the Chamber Executive Director before taking on a role as the Southeastern Illinois College Carmi Campus Coordinator.

Dr. Gunzel has roots in Shawneetown and Hardin County.  He was in pharmacy school when he decided he’d like a more, focused and autonomous career.  A friend in podiatry encouraged him to specialize in footcare.  Gunzel practiced in Indianapolis as well as the Air Force during the first Gulf War before coming home to Southern Illinois.  Gunzel had his own practice in Harrisburg near Kroger.  The 2008 flood wreaked havoc on that side of town giving Gunzel the choice to purchase all new equipment and find a new work space or to find a partner to practice with.  He found that in Carbondale where he practiced through last fall.

Gunzel is now part of Ferrell Hospital (since October 2018) and is based in Eldorado Mondays through Wednesdays.  He comes to the Carmi location each Thursday.  Gunzel sees patients with a variety of issues from diabetic foot care and heel pain to your run of the mill bunions and ingrown toenails.  And to reiterate, he says if you closely examine the orthotics at the name brand custom kiosk, you’ll find that they’re all basically the same.  Moreover, in a truly superior marketing move, he says he’ll gladly tell you where to get the best quality and value orthotics which are half the price of expensive, ineffective big box store options if you just make an appointment with him.
