Busy Night for Carmi White County School Board

Busy Night for Carmi White County School Board

Paul Lunsford of Lunsford Architects, Inc. presented the board with the results from the Facilities Feasibility Study from last November’s board meeting. He noted that because the school buildings are old, the costs of renovation will be expensive. Construction grant applications were submitted to the state last year and are pending, but the chances of receiving a grant are slim. The study determined that the estimated cost of total renovation of the buildings was $13.3 million for Washington School, $6.5 million for Lincoln School and $6.4 million for Jefferson School. He said it would cost $24.7 million to build a new Pre-K through 8th Grade school and $22 million for a new Pre-K through 6th Grade school. The board members decided to speak with other experts at next month’s board meeting as they want to have all the information they can.

Total revenue for December was $707,205 which included $62,041 from the one percent sales tax. Also, the municipal bonds yielded $51,380.

In the superintendent report, Brad Lee said the district has been awarded a School Library Grant of about $1,000 to supply supplementary support for their library media program, which enhances student’s learning and academics.

District enrollment shows it has 1,395 students, which is up 27 students from last year at this time.

Dr. Amy Dixon, Director of Instruction, gave an update on the district-wide inservice held on January 2nd. It included on-site professional development that allows teachers to accumulate full-day professional development hours.

Dan White addressed the board members about a problem he has the district’s policy towards single sport student-athletes taking varsity phys-ed.. He said his daughter was pulled from varsity P.E. recently as she was told that it wasn’t allowed. Superintendent Lee said it might have been an oversight. White asked the board to consider changing the policy.

In other business, the board rejected a bid on two half-ton eight to ten passenger vehicles from Teffertiller Motors for $41,315 each.

They agreed to final approval of the amending of 17 board policies; to the resignations of Alex Aud as an english language arts teacher at the high school effective July 30th and Brianne Douthiff as high school assistant volleyball coach effective immediately; and $2,633.50 in donations to the district and Brownsville School. Also named as Board Scholars for the first semester of this school year were 20 freshmen, ten sophomores, ten juniors and 13 seniors.

The board went into closed session at 7:46 PM to discuss personnel.
