Winter Weather Advisory Tonight

Winter Weather Advisory Tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 3 this afternoon (wed) through 6  Thursday evening.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

Snow is expected to develop and spread north across the region this afternoon and into tonight. Snowfall amounts of two to five inches  are expected with isolated higher amounts possbile. Light freezing rain will also mix with the snow in some locations. There is also the possibility of ice accumulation up to a tenth of an inch.

The advisory effects all of Southeastern Illinois, including Edwards, Gallatin, Saline, Hamilton, Wayne, Hardin, Wabash and White Counties. In Southern Indiana, Posey, Gibson and Vanderburgh are in the advisory area and portions of western Kentucky.

Locally drivers are reminded to slow down, use caution. Remember bridges and overpasses will freeze first so be mindful when crossing bridges and overpasses. Motorists may also want to take the time to make sure their vehicle is ready for winter. Check your tires and make sure your windshield wipers are in good working order and fill up your windshield washer reservoir.

It’s also a good idea to have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle. Those kits should include a flashlight, batteries, a blanket, snacks, water, gloves, boots, a first-aid kit, tire chains, an ice scraper/snow brush, jumper cables and road flares.

One may also consider a candle in a protective can, which could provide light and some heat in case one does get stuck in a snowbank.
