Big Night for Republicans in White County
While the local elections were not a referendum on President Donald Trump, he would certainly be pleased with the results of Tuesday’s elections in White County, as other than non-contested races, local Republicans won every contested race, except County Board District Five.
Democrat Clint Spencer narrowly defeated the Republican challenger Steven Shelton, winning by 20 votes. The final tally was Spencer, 584, Shelton, 564.
Spencer told WROY/WRUL News it was a tough win, but it’s now time to get down to business;
County Board District One was easily won by Jackie Carter, who defeated the Democratic candidate John Gunter. Carter won with 797 votes to Gunter’s 432.
White County Sheriff Doug Maier defeated Democratic challenger Jonathan Williams by a vote of 4656 to 1250.
White County Treasurer Pam Armstrong won the support of the people who decided to give Armstrong a second term, as she easily defeated her Democratic Challenger Sandy Choate by a margin of 3906 to 1972.
The race for the 109th General Assembly seat in the Illinois congress was district wide by Darren Bailey, the republican who defeated incumbent David Reiss in the spring primary easily won White County by defeating Cynthia Given by a vote of 4080 to 1714.
While the Republicans scored big in White County, Democrats did hold onto the County Clerk’s office, where new clerk Beth Sell, a democrat ran with no opposition.
Terry Zeigler Abell, supervisor of assessments, also ran unopposed leaving that office in Democratic control. The Democrats also hold the Circuit Clerk’s office, with Democratic circuit clerk Kelly Sexton.
