What’s On Your Ballot
A large number of county residents took advantage of early voting, but for those who didn’t, the polls are now open and will remain open through 7 this evening.
Voters will be asked to decide a number of state races, as well as local.
Statewide, Incumbent Governor Bruce Rauner faces a challenge from Democrat J. B. Pritzker, Libertarian Grayson Kash Jackson and Conservative candidate William Sam McCann.
There is a three way race for Attorney General, pitting Republican Erika Harold against Democrat Kwame Raul and Libertarian Bubba Harsy.
The Secretary of State candidates are incumbent Jesse White, a democrat; Jason Helland, a republican and Steve Dutner, the libertarian candidate.
There is a three way race for Comptroller pitting incumbent Susana A. Mendoza, a democrat against Republican Darlene Senger and libertarian Claire Ball.
The state wide treasurer race includes Republican Jim Dodge, Democrat Michael Frerichs and Libertarian Michael Leheney.
Local voters will also decide whether to send John Shimkus back to the 15th District congressional seat or Kevin Gaither, the democratic challenger.
Voters will also decide who will replace David Reiss in the Illinois General Assembly for the 109 District, Darren Bailey, the republican who defeated Reiss in the primary or Cynthia Given, an Olney businesswoman with family ties to White County.
Locally, there is no race for county clerk, as Democrat Beth Sell, a long time employee of the clerk’s office has no opposition.
The county treasurer’s race pits incumbent Republican Pam Armstrong against Democratic challenger Sandy Choate, a long time employee of the Clerk’s office.
The sheriff’s race is between incumbent Doug maier and his democratic challenger Jonathan Williams.
Terry Ziegler Abell, the democratic supervisor of assessments had no opposition.
The Regional Superintendent of Schools, Democrat Elizabeth (Beth) Rister had no competition.
There are two county board races.
In District One; Republican Jakie Carter and Democrat John Gunter are seeking to represent the citizens of Mill Shoals Precincts 1 and 2, Enfield Precinct 4 and Carmi Precinct 13.
Clint Spencer, a Democrat and Republican Steven Shelton are seeking the District 5 seat that represents Gray Precinct 24, Philips Precinct 26, Hawthorne 28 and Emma Precinct 30.
There is also a race for judge of the Fifth Judicial District between David Overstreet, a republican and Democrat Kevin T. Hoerner.
Voters will also be asked to vote on judge retention, including Judges Melissa Morgan, Christopher Weber, T. Scott Webb, Jo Beth Weber, and Eric Dirnbeck.
Local voters will also be asked to decide if they approve a point five percent public safety tax, which will be used specifically for the White County Ambulance Service.
And there is an advisory question on the local ballot, concerning the civil rights of firearm owners. The advisory question basically ask voters if they are opposed to all attempts by the Illinois General Assembly to infringe upon the right of citizens to keep and bear arms.
