The top-seeded CWC Lady Bulldogs were upset in the championship game of the Class 2A Harrisburg Regional by the host team 5-4 on Saturday.
Even though the Ladies outhit Harrisburg 9 to 5, they made an uncharacteristic, unofficial five errors. Harrisburg got on the board in the second via a walk, sacrifice bunt and a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the 5th when Harrisburg sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring 4 runs on only 3 hits, aided by two errors and a walk to take a 5-0 lead.
Carmi got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th as Bailey Winters hit her sixth home run of the season. With two outs, Jerrica Money singled and Gabbie Brown came in to courtesy run. Claire Blankenberger followed with an RBI double scoring Brown. Maddie Wenzel reached on a throwing error allowing Blankenberger to score. Pinch hitter Paige Winter came up with a single scoring Wenzel to make it a 5-4 count.
Kelsey Rogers hit a laser right at the left fielder, who played her perfectly, ending the threat. Alexa Combs led off the bottom of the 7th with a single, but the Lady Bulldogs couldn't come up with the key hit, ending the ball game.
The Lady Bulldogs had a couple of other chances to score, but again lacked the key hit. In both the third and fifth innings, they had runners at first and second with no one out, but couldn't get the runs home.
Kaylea Chappelle was the tough luck loser as all five of Harrisburg's runs were unearned. Chappelle allowed only five hits, while walking three and striking out four. CWC's season closes at 31-5. The 31 victories is a school record for wins.
Harrisburg improves to 27-6 and will play Nashville in the Johnston City Sectional on Wednesday, May 28.
